Jewel Thief Review :Plot Summary
In Jewel Thief, Rajan Aulakh (Jaideep Ahlawat) targets the priceless African diamond, The Red Sun, set to be showcased at an elite art gallery in India. To pull off the impossible, he seeks out Rehan Roy (Saif Ali Khan), a master thief known for his brilliance. However, convincing Rehan is no easy feat. Rajan cunningly frames Rehan’s estranged father (Kulbhushan Kharbanda) for a crime, forcing Rehan to take up the dangerous mission.
Initially hesitant, Rehan eventually accepts the task, setting the stage for a high-stakes heist that promises action, mind games, and unexpected twists.
What Works in Jewel Thief?
One of the highlights of Jewel Thief is seeing Saif Ali Khan return to his suave, sharp-witted persona, reminiscent of his iconic role as Ranvir Singh in Race. His charisma, cool action sequences, and stylish demeanor are a treat for fans.
The second half of the film injects much-needed energy, especially with the heist being executed mid-air — a refreshing twist in Bollywood’s heist genre. The clever planning, unexpected betrayals, and cat-and-mouse tension between Saif and Jaideep Ahlawat lift the entertainment quotient.

What Doesn’t Work in Jewel Thief?
Despite its thrilling premise, Jewel Thief stumbles in execution. The first 50-60 minutes feel sluggish and struggle to establish momentum. Saif’s performance, while charming at times, appears inconsistent due to outdated dialogues and routine screenplay.
The face-off between Rehan and Vikram Patel (Kunal Kapoor), the no-nonsense cop, lacks real tension, making the cat-and-mouse chase feel one-sided. Moreover, the undercooked romantic subplot between Saif Ali Khan and Nikita Dutta adds little value, lacking chemistry and emotional depth.
Even musically, Jewel Thief disappoints. Apart from the peppy track Jaadu, which plays towards the end, the soundtrack fails to leave a mark.
Performances and Direction
- Saif Ali Khan brings his signature swagger and screen presence but is let down by uneven writing.
- Jaideep Ahlawat impresses in parts but isn’t given enough depth to make Rajan a memorable villain.
- Nikita Dutta shines briefly but isn’t given enough scope to make an impact.
- Kunal Kapoor plays his role earnestly but is never truly a formidable challenge to Saif’s character.
Directors Kookie Gulati and Robbie Grewal succeed in giving Jewel Thief a grand, cinematic look, making it visually appealing for Netflix viewers. However, the lack of tight storytelling and impactful direction prevents the film from becoming a standout heist thriller.
