Eight years after the original, Moana 2 Review follows Moana (Auli’i Cravalho) as she embarks on another daring adventure, this time to break a curse threatening her island. Joining her once again is Maui (Dwayne Johnson), along with a quirky new crew that adds fresh dynamics to the familiar wayfinding journey. Together, they face dangerous monsters and navigate personal challenges, showcasing the power of teamwork and resilience.

What Works

The sequel retains the charm of the original with its vibrant animation, lovable characters, and thrilling adventure. Auli’i Cravalho seamlessly reprises her role, bringing ferocity and warmth to Moana, while Dwayne Johnson’s Maui remains a comedic standout, delivering charisma and humor in every scene.

The new characters, including Rose Matafeo’s perfectionist Loto and Hualālai Chung’s Maui superfan Moni, bring fresh energy and funny moments, enriching the ensemble. The action sequences are visually stunning, featuring creative monster designs and fast-paced, engaging set pieces.

What Doesn’t Work

While the film offers plenty of entertainment, it falls short in its music. Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear’s compositions lack the memorable punch of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s original soundtrack. Songs like “Beyond” stand out, but none reach the iconic status of “How Far I’ll Go.”

The narrative also struggles to justify certain characters, like Matangi, whose underdeveloped role feels unnecessary. The emotional resonance and character growth of the first film are missing, making this sequel feel more like a fun continuation than a groundbreaking addition to Moana’s story.

Fashion and Style in Moana 2

The film’s animation continues to impress with its attention to cultural detail. Moana’s updated wardrobe reflects her evolution as a leader, featuring traditional Polynesian designs paired with adventurous practicality. Maui’s tattoos remain a visual delight, adding humor and storytelling elements.

New character designs, such as Loto’s meticulous attire and Moni’s vibrant outfits, add personality and flair to the crew, while the island’s lush aesthetics enhance the film’s immersive world-building.

Final Verdict

Moana 2 is a visually stunning and entertaining sequel that, while not as emotionally impactful or musically memorable as its predecessor, delivers enough laughs and excitement for fans. It’s a safe, well-crafted adventure that families will enjoy, even if it doesn’t break new ground.
